Piggly Wiggly was the first self-service grocery store. It was founded on September 6, 1916, at 79 Jefferson Avenue in Memphis, Tennessee, by Clarence Saunders. Lowes Foods started in 1954 in Wilkesboro, North Carolina, with a single store opened by Jim Lowe. Lowe sold that store to J. C. Faw.
